Welcome to For the L♥ v e of Math!
I believe that all students can learn math, love (okay, or at least like) math, and succeed in math.
Too many students leave their K-12 education with a negative relationship to mathematics. For the Love of Math is about reigniting and maintaining student curiosity in mathematics, while also improving students’ foundational skills that are necessary for their success in both academics and life, all the while having a lot of fun!
What is For the L♥ v e of Math?
For the Love of Math is an after school mathematics workshop that builds relationships between students and is tailored to your child’s specific needs by centering joy, curiosity, and student growth in mathematics. Each For the Love of Math cohort is a group of 2 to 4 students curated by the parents/guardians. Oftentimes, it is a small group of friends who attend the same school and have similar experiences in math class. For the Love of Math supports families and students to identify a common goal for small group tutoring, such as improving students’ math grades at school, getting creative in mathematics, increasing mathematical confidence, or even studying for the SAT/ACT in a more engaging and fun way.
For the Love of Math sessions take place at one of the student’s houses for either 60 or 90 minutes sessions once a week or bi-weekly. Each session uses a unique curriculum geared towards the specific goals of the students. With a decade of experience in mathematics education, Lizzy brings in a wealth of outside resources and materials such as games, projects, manipulatives, and puzzles to support student learning, and students have weekly assignments that spark creativity, curiosity, and family bonding over mathematics.
Why is For the L♥ v e of Math better than other tutoring services?
Deeper Learning
While one-on-one tutoring is also available, Lizzy has found over the course of her career that students learn more in small groups than working one-on-one with an adult. This is because in small groups, students are exposed to a variety of mathematical ideas and are able to sort through problems together. Under the guidance of an expert mathematics educator, students can build confidence in verbalizing their ideas and develop strong mathematical collaboration skills. Students are then able to bring these skills into their school settings, where students are frequently asked to work together in pairs or small groups.
Strengthened Academic Peer Relationships
As your child progresses through the K-12 education system, it is integral that they form strong academic bonds with their peers. Working through interesting and complex problems with their peers deepens their academic relationships and ability to receive support and offer support to one another in more challenging courses.
Affordability
High quality tutoring is expensive. At $200/hr, For the Love of Math is more affordable than hiring a private one-on-one tutor for your child. Your child will receive instruction and engage in activities catered to their specific needs, but at a much lower rate, and in my opinion, in a stronger, more creative and enjoyable experience.
Personalized Curriculum:
Many tutoring companies or private tutors work through school curriculum with students and do not bring diverse outside resources to their tutoring sessions. While working with school curriculum is certainly important, I work hard to supplement the respective curriculum with a variety of resources to deepen students’ conceptual understanding of academic topics. I am familiar with and am well-practiced with curriculums such as Mathematics Vision Project (MVP), Illustrative Mathematics (IM), EngageNY, Desmos, CPM, as well as ACT, SAT, and GRE prep.
Reception to Feedback/Improvement:
I see my relationship with you (the parent or guardian) as a partnership with a common goal. As a small, sole proprietorship, you will have regular and direct access to me. We will talk about your child and their learning experiences in and outside of school. I will also regularly check in with you regarding your thoughts, concerns, and/or ideas for improvement, and I will be able to implement this feedback immediately. I will also make myself available for personal calls as needed.
